Colin Bryant

Jazz Clarinettist and Saxophonist

COLIN BRYANT was born into a musical family in Poole, Dorset. His parents and four brothers all sang and played various musical instruments. Colin studied the clarinet from the age of 10 with Hiram Lear, the then Principal Clarinet with the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra.

After forming his first band at the age of 15, Colin was one of very few musicians to be accepted for National Service by the Band of Her Majesty’s Royal Marines.

Colin has been playing jazz since the mid-1950s and, on leaving the services, he joined Nat Gonella and his Georgians, playing that summer season at the Rainbow Room in Jersey. Colin then joined the South’s premier jazz band, “The Gerry Brown Jazzmen” who were signed by Britain’s leading agency and he was kept extremely busy during the jazz boom of the sixties, playing jazz clubs, concert dates and festivals throughout Great Britain and Europe. This culminated in the band being chosen to appear with Louis Armstrong on his tour of Great Britain and Colin appeared on twenty-six concert dates with him.

To widen his musical experience, Colin then concentrated on freelancing in both the jazz and commercial fields of music, performing in clubs, on sessions, in hotels and on radio and TV.

In 1975 Colin was asked to provide an ‘All-Star’ jazz and swing band to perform on the prestigious luxury liner, the QE2 and his ‘Hot Rhythm Orchestra’ appeared on board regularly every year, right up until her recent withdrawal from service.

Colin has appeared with many of the world’s top jazz men in virtually every country in Europe and he is equally at home performing on either clarinet or saxophone.

In the late 1960s, he was asked to perform with the Louis Armstrong All Stars clarinettist, Joe Darensbourg, in a jazz feature film which was released in Great Britain, Europe and South Africa.

When not on luxury cruise liners or making personal appearances, Colin’s All Star ‘Hot Rhythm’ are kept busy performing in London’s West End at private parties, also in jazz clubs and at major events throughout the UK. The band have recently played at St James’s Palace and at functions attended by members of the Royal Family.

Colin Bryant is widely considered, both by musicians and audiences, to be one of the finest exponents of jazz clarinet performing in Britain today.
